Bobby Lee. It's hard to put into words what I saw Saturday night in Grand Ronde, OR at The Spirit Mountain Casino. A spectacle of comedy that was so funny I am literally sore from all the laughing we did. I've been documenting comedy in Portland for the last 2 years so you would think that by now I would have a better handle on what to say, but Bobby's show is something else. I see the posts from The Comedy Store and @vancorona of Bobby Lee behind the scenes and on stage but that can't prepare you for the force that is Bobby Lee Live. It is part standup and part improvisation and playing on the crowd but I don't remember not laughing.
Bobby's is a veteran comic who has no trouble writing and performing material from his vast experience, but what differentiates Bobby in my opinion is his ability to engage with the audience and improvise to work the room. He's honed his skills in one of the greatest comedy clubs on the planet, The Comedy Store in LA.
Bobby is fearless and provocative in a way few comedians can sustain. He just rolls with it and becomes part Robin Williams, Helen Cho, and Garry Shandling as references but he is his own performer so I don't want to diminish.
Last night was fun to watch and experience. Thanks Bobby.
Special thanks to Ramsey Badawi and Michael McDonald (not that one) for kicking things off.
